Four Petal Poppy Knitting Pattern

These patterns are designed with double knitting yarn in mind and needle size 3.25mm (imperial size 10) or 3.75mm (imperial size 9).  If you have different yarn that's OK  - just use what you have with the right size needles for the yarn you're using (or slightly smaller is better).  Your poppy will be bigger if your yarn is thicker and your needles bigger and smaller if your yarn is thinner and needles smaller.  Why not experiment and see what you get!

Main part of the poppy:
Cast on 11 stitches

	27	cast off 10 (1 stitch remains)
	28	cast on 10 (11 stitches in total)

k - knit

repeat rows 1- 27

cast off all 11 stitches and leave a long end - you now have 4 petals

Thread long end through the base of the first petal and the base of all the other petals and gather up to close the centre and finish off. If you want your petals to be more closed up (like the red one above) you may need to overlap the petals and put a stitch in them to secure them in place.

Poppy centre:
There are various options for this

Option 1:
Cast on 20 stitches
Rows 1-2: Knit
Row 3: Knit 2 together across the row (10 stitches)
Rows 4-5: Knit
Row 6: Knit 2 together across the row (5 stitches) 

Leave a long tail and thread through the remaining stitches.  Pull tight into a circle and secure. Stitch the 2 edges neatly together and stitch into the centre of your poppy. 

Option 2:
Cast on 18 stitches
Knit a row
Leave a long tail and thread through the remaining stitches.  Pull tight into a circle and secure. Stitch the 2 edges neatly together and stitch into the centre of your poppy. 

Black eyelash yarn

You can use any black yarn but eyelash yarn makes a nice fluffy centre.

Option 3:
Sew a black button in the centre of your poppy.
